Royal Gramma Basslet

The Royal Gramma Basslet can be boisterous and territorial, but it has a peaceful temperament.

It has bright body colouration which will stand out in the tank. The front half of its body is a vivid violet/purple colour and the rear is a bright yellow.

The Royal Gramma Basslet is an easy fish to look after. They are a hardy species, compatible with many fish, and easy to feed.

It is easy to breed these fish in captivity, which is unusual for saltwater fish. The courtship starts with the male using small rocks and algae to make a nest. The female uses the nest to deposit her eggs, (usually between 5 and 40) which the male fertilizes. It takes around a week for the eggs to hatch, as they start to grow it is recommended to initially feed them rotifers and copepods. Once they have developed into a fry newly hatched brine shrimp is recommended.

Their natural environment is around reefs, often congregating under reef ledges. They have been recorded at depths of up to 65 meters.

It is native to the Western Atlantic tropical areas such as the Caribbean.
