Bicolour Dottyback
Its’ habitat spreads from shallow coastal reefs to deep reef drop-offs further out. They are usually found in abundant areas of coral or around coral rubble, either on their own or in small scattered groups. In an aquarium environment, there should be plenty of hiding places available which Dottybacks will defend against any intruders.
Bicolour Dottyback instigates reproduction with the male performing a mating dance outside his cave. If the female accepts the males’ dance she will enter the cave. The female will lay eggs which the male fertilizes. The egg sack is stuck to the inside of the males’ cave and he will guard the eggs, even keeping the female away from them.
Bicolour Dottybacks grow to the greatest length of around 8 centimetres (3 inches) in the wild, but in captivity, 6 cm (2.5 inches) is more usual.
Tank Recommendations for Bicolour Dottyback
The smallest recommended tank size is 114 litres (30 gallons). The tank should not be in direct sun or other harsh light.
Suitable Tank Buddies
This fish can be very territorial and will fish with fish several times its size and has been knowing to fight to the death with similar-looking fish.
Usually Compatible
Dottybacks are compatible with Hawkfish. Damsels, Angels, Squirrels, Parrots and Clownfish. It is usually best if the Dottyback is added to the tank last and it’s preferable to house them with fish that will not get bullied easily.
Sometime Compatible
Non-aggressive fish such as Blennies, Gobies and small wrasses will be targeted and harassed by Dottybacks. Adding Dottybacks to peaceful aquariums will cause problems for more timid fish which reside there.
Rarely Compatible
Avoid Anglers, Frogs, Anthias, Eels and Hogfish.
Feeding Your Bicolour Dottyback
Bicolour Dottybacks are carnivores. They can eat a mixture of prepared frozen foods and meaty foods such as brine and mysis shrimp.
Prepared colour enhancing foods or food containing carotenoids such as krill are beneficial for maintaining perfect colouration.
Feed them several times a day, to a fixed schedule if possible.
